What does God say about Himself?

In the Bible God tells us that we all have an awareness of His existence.  In the deepest part of our souls we know that there is a God.  The reality of a created universe is all the proof we need that He is real.

Romans 1:19-20 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.

The problem is that we naturally tend to suppress the truth about God. We are hesitant to admit that there is a God who is in control of everything, and we are accoutable to Him. So we have a tendency to make God to be less than He really is. We make an idol in our minds of what we would like God to be.

Romans 1:21-23 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

But God has revealed Himself in a general way through nature and in an more specific way through His Word (the Bible). Here’s some of the things that the Bible says about God.

  • He is a personal Being who can be known

John 17:3 And this is the life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent.

  • He is the only God. All other gods are not real

Isaiah 45:22 Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.

  • He is a relational, Trinitarian Being (three persons in one essence)

1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

  • He is holy, in that He is transcendent and separate from evil

Isaiah 6:3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of His glory.

  • He is good in everything He does

Psalm 34:8 O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in Him.

  • He is kind and gracious

Psalm 36:7 How excellent is Thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Thy wings.
